3 min read

In several Indonesian cities, informal parking attendants, known as “jukir liar”, who work at stores like Indomaret and Alfamart, often take home earnings that can exceed the monthly salary of recently hired civil servants (CPNS).

Indomaret Parking Man Income

According to detikFinance, attendants in Jakarta typically charge between Rp 1,000 to Rp 2,000 per motorcycle. On busy days, their daily income can reach Rp 150,000 to Rp 250,000, which amounts to around Rp 4. 5 million to Rp 7. 5 million per month. This is more than the 2024 Jakarta provincial minimum wage of Rp 5. 06 million.

A report from Kompas.com stated that an attendant in Cakung earned about Rp 100,000 per day without any revenue-sharing system, and all the money went directly into his pocket. During peak periods, such as student enrollment season in Malang, these attendants can make up to Rp 400,000 per day. Over a month, this can total Rp 11 to Rp 12 million even after subtracting operational costs of around Rp 750,000, as reported by Hops.ID.

For comparison, the starting salary for CPNS ranges from Rp 1.6 million to Rp 5 million per month, depending on rank and location, according to Peraturan BKN Nomor 1 Tahun 2024, as summarized by detikFinance. This means many parking attendants in high-traffic areas can earn more than a newly hired government worker.

New CPNS Income

For your information, some new CPNS only receive 80% of the monthly salary in the first year of work. One of my family who was accepted as CPNS in East Java got monthly salary IDR 2.8 million and he receive only 80% of it in the first year of work. And the first 3 month salaries will be paid the first 3rd months of work.

Many new CPNS officers also need work hard from morning to evening and go home late. A lot of stories from new CPNS that they got a lot of job outside their original job description.

Economic researchers told detikFinance that a jukir managing about 100 vehicles a day can collect around Rp 200,000 daily, which translates to Rp 6 million per month after any possible revenue sharing with landowners or local groups.

In very busy locations, monthly earnings can even reach as high as Rp 7. 5 million. The difference between formal employment and informal parking work is significant. CPNS positions offer job security, benefits, and legal protection, but they start with lower pay.

Meanwhile, parking attendants in busy urban areas often make more money, though they face risks like job instability, legal uncertainties, and the possibility of being targeted by local authorities.
