Why Parking at Indomaret and Alfamart Should Be Free for Customers?

3 min read

Leading convenience store groups in Indonesia, like Indomaret and Alfamart, have had a simple rule for a long time: customers can park for free.

This is not only a marketing strategy but an integral aspect of their customer-centric philosophy.

Remember, parking your vehicle in Indomaret and Alfamart must be free or no charge!

Respond of Indomaret and Alfamart

Both Anggara Hans Prawira, President Director of Alfamart, and Bastari Akmal from Indomaret have confirmed that parking fees are not and have never been part of their business model (tirto.id).

Nevertheless, in reality, the circumstances on the ground frequently convey a contrasting narrative. Numerous consumers continue to pay illegal parking attendants, referred to locally as “jukir liar.”

These individuals occupy store entrances, direct customers to parking spaces, and subsequently solicit a fee as if it were obligatory. In actuality, they possess no formal affiliation with the store whatsoever  (voi.id).

For many, refusing payment can feel uncomfortable or even confrontational, leading customers to pay simply to avoid trouble.

Protecting customers from these types of situations requires a free parking policy that is transparent and regularly enforced.

Unauthorized collectors have much less opportunity to take advantage of unwary customers when rules are clearly explained and supported by the retailer (voi.id).

Recognizing the problem, several local governments have started dealing with it more seriously. In Jakarta, officials have openly said they are ready to take legal steps against people who collect parking fees without permission.

They also reminded that stores like Indomaret and Alfamart do not charge for parking (antaranews.com).

In Surabaya, the mayor, along with the Indonesian Retailers Association (APRINDO), signed an agreement to ensure that all participating mini-markets, including Indomaret and Alfamart, offer free parking and stop illegal workers from asking for money (jawapos.com).

Pekanbaru has also announced similar plans. Free parking is set to be introduced in modern retail stores soon after Eid al-Fitr 2025. Retailers will keep paying their parking taxes to the local government but will not charge customers (pekanbaru.go.id).

Offering free parking is more than just a kind gesture; it’s about fairness, convenience, and protecting customers. No one wants to be stopped for a small fee when they are just picking up a drink or a quick snack.

A clear and properly enforced free-parking policy makes shopping easier, less stressful, and fair for everyone.

So, once again, parking vehicles in Indomaret and Alfamart must be free or no charge. If you park your vehicles in their parking area and you must pay, don’t blame Indomaret and Alfamart.

Blame some local government and police officers who don’t use their power to diminish those illegal parking practices.
